Steinau Scores OT Game Winner, Seals Lynchburg Comeback Victory

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior attack McKenna Steinau and the Lynchburg Hornets mounted a five-goal comeback in the fourth quarter to capture a 9-8 overtime win over St. Mary's (Md.) in their home opener.

The Lynchburg Hornets (3-0) trailed 8-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of action. After being outscored 4-0 by the St. Mary's (0-2) Seahawks in the previous quarter, the Hornets responded immediately.

Within the first minute of resumed action, Sydney Dumas cut into the defense on an extra-man opportunity — simultaneously securing her third hat trick of the season in as many games. One minute and six seconds later, another St. Mary's penalty resulted in the same outcome, this time by way of Steinau for her second goal of the contest.

Back-to-back goals for Lynchburg shifted the momentum back in the Hornets' favor and led to another Steinau strike for the second Lynchburg hat trick of the night. Once the deficit was trimmed to one, the Seahawks managed to hold their edge and keep the Hornets at bay — until the final minute.

With one minute remaining, Lynchburg's aggressive offensive pressure forced three consecutive free-position opportunities. The Hornets had missed their first four free-position attempts — including two in the final minute — but they converted the fifth. Dumas buried the equalizer with 36 seconds remaining to force overtime.

In extra time, Lynchburg earned yet another free-position chance. Steinau delivered the finishing blow, sealing the comeback with her fourth goal of the night for a 9-8 overtime victory at home.

Lynchburg outshot St. Mary's 13-4 across the final two periods while committing just one turnover during that stretch.

The Hornets return to the road for their next set of games, starting with Sweet Briar (0-1) on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
