Hornets Battle Yellow Jackets in Competitive Three Frame Loss

Box Score ASHLAND, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's volleyball team fell in straight sets Wednesday night, dropping a 3–0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest to Randolph-Macon.

Mason Kenna paced the Lynchburg (8-9, 5-4 ODAC) attack with 10 kills while hitting .368 on the night. Joshua Davis added nine kills, and Heath Atkins contributed seven kills on an efficient .600 hitting percentage.

Setter Will Radi directed the offense with 30 assists, while Brayden Berardo led the Hornets defensively with eight digs. As a team, Lynchburg recorded 37 kills and hit .244 in the match.

Randolph-Macon (20-3, 8-0 ODAC) claimed the match by scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-22.

Lynchburg came out strong in the opening set, jumping ahead 12-7 and forcing Randolph-Macon to play from behind early. The Yellow Jackets quickly found their rhythm, however, producing an extremely efficient stretch offensively. Randolph-Macon committed just two errors in the set while surging ahead to claim the opener, 25-19.

The Hornets again positioned themselves well in the second frame. Lynchburg built a 22-18 advantage and appeared poised to even the match, but Randolph-Macon mounted another late push. The Yellow Jackets strung together an 8-2 run to close the set, with five of those points coming from the service line, to secure a 26-24 victory and a two-set lead.

The third set followed a similar pattern. Lynchburg controlled much of the frame and held a 17-14 advantage as the Hornets looked to steal a set from a Randolph-Macon team that had not dropped one since Feb. 28 against No. 6 Messiah. Once again, the Yellow Jackets responded late, edging ahead to complete the 25-22 win and close out the match.

Despite the result, the Hornets pushed one of the conference's top teams throughout the evening in a tightly contested battle.

Lynchburg resumes play this weekend, with another home ODAC bout against Eastern Mennonite for their second matchup this season.
