Early Goals Push Hornets to 7-1 Victory over Vixens

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team scored three times in the first 10 minutes, before pulling away for a 7-1 victory over Sweet Briar College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

The Hornets kept the pressure up early as Morgan Lammando slammed away a Kelli Williams assist for her fourth goal of the season. Kelsey Link added a tally of her own, and what would prove to be the game-winner, on a Katie Kline helper 50 seconds later for the 2-0 advantage.

Meredith Bradsher and Link contributed unassisted scores to give Lynchburg a 4-0 lead 11 minutes into the contest before the Vixen defense settled in.

Sweet Briar collected nine saves in the first half, several coming on key defensive saves by the Vixen back line.

Lynchburg managed one more score in the first half, coming just two minutes before halftime, when Taylor Quillen sent a penalty corner in to Courtney Gillette. The stopper on the play, Gillette sent the ball in to Abby Bunting for her second goal of the year.

Lammando added a second goal and Danielle Kreider picked up her first of the 2013 campaign to round out the scoring for the Hornets. Megan McAnally and Kline each had assists in the second half.

Sweet Briar got on the board with four minutes remaining as Allison McLamb found an opening in the defense to put away the pass from Adelaide Hedge.

Lynchburg outshot the Vixens 48-3 and maintained a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Skylar Rowan made 21 saves for Sweet Briar (1-11/0-6). Eve Mergenthaler had two defensive stops while McLamb and Hedge contributed one each.

Jordan Seeley, Hannah Myers, and Beka Hess all had at least 19 minutes in the cage for the Hornets.

Lynchburg (9-4/4-0) hosts Centre College (11-1) Friday at 3 p.m. in non-conference action.
