Lynchburg Softball Sweeps ODAC Opening DH at Shenandoah

SHENANDOAH, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened its 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon, 6-5 in 10 innings and 13-6.

For the second time in the last two weeks, LC dramatically rallied from a three-run deficit with two outs in the seventh for a come-from-behind victory.

Trailing 3-0 in the top half of the seventh frame with one out in the first game, Michaela Munday doubled and Kacey Clary followed with a walk. After the second out was recorded, Nicole Shipp was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jessi Hall drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 3-1 with the bases still loaded, and a Shenandoah error plated two runs to tie the game. Each team scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, and an error in the 10th gave LC the go-ahead run. Elizabeth Fioretti came in to record the save, leaving a Shenandoah runner stranded on third base.

Hope Johnson allowed just one earned run to post the victory, scattering 10 hits and no walks over nine innings with seven strikeouts. Brittany Guepe and Heather Sink each had three hits for the hosts.

Lynchburg struck for nine runs in the second inning of the nightcap, taking advantage of six SU errors in the frame. Danielle Powell had a two-run double in the inning, and Melanie Tenney also drove in two runs in the second.

Tenney finished 3-4 with two runs and Powell also had three hits. Lauren McCabe went 3-4 with three RBI for Shenandoah (14-8/4-2), and SU was credited with 10 errors in the second game.

Lynchburg (13-4/2-0) hosts the University of Mary Washington Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
