LC Softball Takes Two at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, VA – The 13th-ranked Lynchburg College softball team continued on its winning ways Thursday afternoon with a 5-1, 2-1 doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. LC has won eight-straight games and 15 of the last 16.
The Hornets scored a single run in the first inning, Jessi Hall walked and scored on a double from Melanie Tenney. The pair delivered another run in the fifth, as Tenney again doubled to plate Hall. LC scored two unearned runs in the sixth, with Hall bringing in a run with a single. Danielle Powell nailed a home run in the seventh in to put LC ahead 5-0.
Sophomore Hope Johnson earned the win in the circle, bringing her record to 11-1. She allowed just six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Johnson hasn't given up a free pass in her last three starts and has won her last seven starts.
Bridgewater took an early lead in the nightcap, scoring a run on a Brooke Throckmorton RBI double. BC held a 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth when Hall slapped a two-run double to centerfield to put Lynchburg ahead 2-1. LC had a chance to extend the lead in the 7th, but Eagle pitcher Brianna Cox pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam. Bridgewater got the leadoff hitter on in the bottom of the seventh, but the base runner was quickly erased by LC catcher Michaela Munday with a pickoff.
Elizabeth Fioretti worked 4.2 innings of scoreless relief for the victory, allowing only two hits while striking out eight. Leigh Lam had two hits for Bridgewater (18-10/8-4 ODAC).
The Hornets (24-5/9-1 ODAC) have a busy weekend, traveling to Guilford College Saturday for a doubleheader at 2:30 and hosting Roanoke College Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
