LC Softball Splits Doubleheader at Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC – The 13th-ranked Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday at Guilford College, breaking a nine-game winning streak. It was LC's first loss in the month of April.
The Hornets won the first game, 12-5 behind three hits and two RBI from senior Cassie Phillips. Nicole Riley and Danielle Powell each had two hits, two walks and two runs, and Melanie Tenney reached base three times and scored twice. Hope Johnson allowed no earned runs in seven innings to pick up the win.
Lynchburg looked like it might cruise to an easy victory after scoring five times in the first inning, with Phillips hitting a two-run single and Kacey Clary drilling a run-scoring double. The Quakers answered with five runs in the second, taking advantage of a Hornet error. Ashley Boteler hit a two-run home run in the frame. LC plated one run in the third and three more in the fifth, as GC made three errors in the two innings. The Hornets broke the game open in the seventh with three more tallies, as Powell hit an RBI double and Amy Bresson brought in a run with a single.
The Quakers earned the doubleheader split with a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Guilford scored a run in a third and two in the fourth to go up 3-0. Phillips got Lynchburg on the board with a solo homer in the fifth and the Hornets threatened in the seventh. Riley hit a two-out RBI double, but Guilford's Maggie Shaffer was able to get out of the jam.
Emily VanHaneghan went 3-4 for Guilford (17-13/3-9 ODAC) and Shaffer earned the win in the circle. Phillips threw two innings of hitless relief for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg (25-6/10-2 ODAC) hosts Roanoke College Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in another ODAC doubleheader. Phillips, the program's only senior, will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.
