Hornet Softball Sweeps Randolph-Macon

LYNCHBURG, VA – The 18th-ranked Lynchburg College softball team swept an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday against visiting Randolph-Macon College on Moon Field.

Sophomore Hope Johnson threw a complete game in the opener, a 7-1 Hornet victory. She scattered eight hits but walked no batters and struck out seven.

Lynchburg struck for three runs in the bottom of third. With two runners on and one out, Danielle Powell ripped an RBI double, and Amber Ingram followed with a run-scoring single. Michaela Munday plated LC's third run of the frame with another double. A Yellow Jacket miscue aided LC in the bottom of the fifth to the tune of four unearned runs. Amy Bresson drew a bases-loaded walk to score one run and Jessi Hall had an RBI in the inning. Sharese Jarvis provided the Yellow Jackets offense with a solo home run. Ingram and Melanie Tenney each had two hits for LC.

Lynchburg exploded for six runs in the first inning of game two, an 8-6 Hornet victory. Ingram delivered a three-run homer and Cassie Phillips belted a two-run shot in the frame. R-MC scored one in the bottom of the first, but LC added to its lead in the fourth. Jessi Hall led off with her seventh triple of the season and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tenney. The Yellow Jackets scored five times in the fifth, with Jarvis hitting a grand slam, to cut the lead to 7-6. Tenney again drove in Hall in the seventh for an insurance run, and LC held on for the win.

Elizabeth Fioretti was awarded the win in the circle for LC, throwing 2.2 innings of perfect relief. Hall and Ingram each had three hits in the nightcap, while Phillips had two. Randolph-Macon falls to 21-6 and 6-4 in the ODAC.

Lynchburg (20-5/5-1 ODAC) hosts Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in another ODAC doubleheader. The Marlins are unbeaten in league play (11-0) and are ranked #24 in D3.
