Lynchburg FH Rallies from Three Down to Take another ODAC Victory at R-MC
ASHLAND, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team hit the road Saturday to take on Randolph-Macon College. The rematch of last year's Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game ended up going into double overtime, resulting in favor of Lynchburg with a final score of 4-3.
Three goals by Randolph-Macon in the first 20 minutes gave the Yellow Jackets an almost insurmountable lead early in the game. Rachael Gardner scored the first one off a rebound, then Olivia Newman found Catherine Pricone on penalty corner to give the Jackets a 2-0 edge. Their last goal came two and a half minutes later by Haley McMahon off an assist from Pricone.
Lynchburg was not finished just yet though. Courtney Gillette scored a goal just moments before the end of the first half to give LC some momentum going into the intermission.
The story of the second half was all Lynchburg, where the Hornets posted 17 of their 38 total shots. Taylor Quillen scored at the 51:21 mark to bring her team within a goal and five minutes later, Gillette found Kelsey Link to even the game 3-3.
Regulation ended to force overtime, but no goals were scored in the first 15-minute extra session, resulting in a second overtime period. Junior Meredith Bradsher finally found the net off a rebound from a penalty corner to win the game for Lynchburg, who has not lost an ODAC game since 2008.
Beka Hess made nine saves in goal for LC. On the other side, Randolph-Macon (3-9, 2-2) goalie Shannon McMurray provided 19 saves for her squad.
Lynchburg (9-6, 4-0) will get about a week to rest and prepare for Shenandoah University to visit on Friday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. game over Homecoming Weekend. Shenandoah is the other remaining unbeaten team in the conference (4-0).
