Generals Bat Way Past Lynchburg in ODAC Opening Doubleheader
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team was outslugged twice by Washington and Lee University, 11-6 in 13 innings and 12-4, Sunday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Lynchburg got on the board first in game one, plating two runs in the second on a Jake Tanner double and sacrifice fly by Lincoln Evans before scoring three more in the third on an RBI single from Joe Tomasulo and two-RBI knock from Drew Taylor.
Trailing 5-1 in the fifth inning, the Generals touched up Lynchburg starter Martin Henderlite for five runs to assume a 6-5 lead.
After striking out Keegan Dolan, Henderlite surrendered a single to Taylor Rowe. Drew Weprinsky singled before Riley Stout's double scored both runners to cut the deficit in half. Kyle Witty singled in two more to tie up the contest before Nick Biumi reached on an error to give the Generals their first lead of the game.
The Hornets struck in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game back at six when Evans worked deep into a 0-2 count to draw a one-out walk. Evans then stole second on Andrew Lamb, coming home on Rob Tomasulo's single up the middle.
Brandon Miller worked seven scoreless innings in relief before the potent Washington and Lee offense came to life for five runs in the 13th inning. Dolan sparked the run with a two-RBI double before Weprinsky sent a long fly ball over the right-field fence to plate three.
Rob Tomasulo went 3-for-4 for the Hornets in game one, while also reaching base via the walk three times.
Washington and Lee struck for two runs in the second inning of game two to put the pressure on the Hornets. Jay Kenyon led off the bottom half of the inning with a long drive to deep center for his second-career homer, both coming at home.
The Generals added one run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead against the Hornets and starting pitcher Zac Patrick. The defense bit the Hornets early in game two as only one of W&L's first three runs was earned.
Washington and Lee added three more tallies in the sixth, capped off by a Taylor Rowe two-run home run, to race ahead 9-1.
KC Caldwell pinch hit in the sixth and doubled down the left field line for his first collegiate hit. He later scored on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to seven.
Rob Tomasulo ended 2-for-4 from the dish in game two, reaching base in eight of his 11 trips to the plate on the day.
Rowe drove in five Generals (8-2/2-0) in the game two victory while score three runs.
Lynchburg (7-3/0-2) hosts Greensboro College Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
