LC Falls to the Quakers 61-56
GREENSBORO, NC – Matt McCarthy scored a game-high 20 points for Guilford College, as the Lynchburg College men's basketball team fell to the Quakers 61-56 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday night.
The Quakers came out of the gate quickly, taking a seven-point lead within the first two minutes of the game. LC cut the gap to one after a three-point field goal from Daniel Rowe and a traditional three-point play from Omar Kemp. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the half, but GC would not relinquish its advantage during the stanza. McCarthy made a layup at the buzzer to put the lead at 33-27, entering the intermission.
Following the break, the Hornets picked up their defensive intensity, holding the Quakers without any points for the first three minutes. Alex Graves scored twice to cut the disadvantage to two.
The GC lead would come down to one on two separate occasions over the next two minutes after shots from behind the arc by Rowe and Chase Hankins. Lynchburg then took its first lead with 14:12 remaining after a pair of free throws from Lyndon White.
LC held onto the lead until 9:09 when McCarthy hit his second three of the game and tied the score at 47. After a free throw by David Rogers put the Hornets back up by one, Guilford retook the lead on a Will Freeman layup. It was a lead the Quakers would hold for the rest of the game. Lynchburg had its best chance to take the lead with 40 seconds left, but could not connect on a three-point attempt.
The major story of the game proved to be the defensive work on each side. Both teams were held to under 40 percent shooting from the field for the game, and under 25 percent from distance.
Jonny Rice notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win for Guilford (10-4 overall, 3-2 ODAC). A.J. Hamilton led the Hornets with 10 points, followed by Hankins who was 3-5 from beyond the arc. Kemp tied a career-high with nine rebounds.
Lynchburg (9-5, 2-3) returns home on Saturday as part of a men's and women's doubleheader, which coincides with Alumni Day. The women will tip-off at 2 pm against Eastern Mennonite University, with the men's game against Washington and Lee University taking place afterwards.
