No. 3 Emory Drops Lynchburg Baseball 13-3 in Seven Innings

ATLANTA, GA – The No. 3-ranked Emory University baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning and took advantage of seven costly Hornet errors to drop the Lynchburg College baseball team 13-3 on Saturday morning.

Brandon Miller started off Saturday's action on a good note, surrendering just one run in the first three innings against one of the top hitting teams in the nation.

The lone Emory run in the early going came in the first when David Coble walked to lead off the contest and scored on a fielding error. Miller allowed just two hits through the first three innings.

Lynchburg managed to get runners on base against Emory ace Connor Dillman, but struggled once again to finish with runners on base, leaving 11 on base throughout the day.

The Hornets manufactured a pair in the second inning as Jonathan Munn walked in front of a Pat Harris single to center field. One out later, Will Hylton tried to sacrifice the runners up but Dillman lost track of the base runners and could not make a play on any of the Hornet runners. A wild pitch during Austin Owens' at bat scored Munn before Owens walked. A passed ball on the deciding pitch allowed Harris to race home, giving the Hornets two runs on the benefit of one hit.

Emory broke the game wide open in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs to take an 8-2 lead. Chris Slivka and Dylan Eisner singled before Jack Karras collected an RBI single through the right side to tie the game at two. A groundout and passed ball scored two more Emory runners for a 4-2 advantage.

Brett Lake doubled home Jordan Selbach before the defensive problems that had plagued the Hornets surfaced again. Three errors in the next three at bats scored the final three runs of the frame to give the Eagles the insurmountable lead.

KC Caldwell singled home Joe Rogers in the top of the fifth to cut into the gap at 7-3, but Emory scored one in the bottom of the frame and four more in the sixth to end the contest.

Dillman (1-0) pitched five innings of two-run ball with four strikeouts and four walks. Eisner went 4-for-4 while Karras drove in three runs.

Caldwell and Rogers had two hits each for the Hornets. Nick Trio kept his ERA perfect in the early going by allowing just one unearned run in 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

Lynchburg (0-5) will conclude play in the Emory Tournament Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. against St. Joseph's (Me.) College (0-0) before making the trek back to Lynchburg.
