Goulding's Complete Game Guides Hornets to DH Split with EMU
LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman David Goulding pitched his second career complete game Saturday afternoon in the Lynchburg College baseball team's 7-0 game one victory before Eastern Mennonite captured game two 8-7 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Goulding faced the minimum through four innings thanks to a caught stealing and double play that wiped a pair of baserunners. The streak of three-up, three-down innings came to a close in the fifth when an error with two outs extended the frame one batter.
The only frame Goulding was challenged in was the sixth when a pair of hits put two Royals on base, but a fielder's choice, groundout, and fly-out preserved the shutout. EMU would not manage a hit the rest of the game.
Goulding (2-1) finished the afternoon with just four hits allowed and a walk in nine innings while striking out four.
Lynchburg plated six of its seven runs in the third inning, doing all the damage on two outs. Kyle Armstrong sat down the first two Hornets quickly, but seven straight hits chased the Royals' starter from the game. Joe Rogers, Jonathan Munn, Luke Rodgers, KC Caldwell, Joe Tomasulo, Rob Tomasulo, and Ryan Katona all collected hits in the string of LC offense. Caldwell had a pair of RBI while Rob Tomasulo tripled and Rodgers doubled.
The second game started out well for the Hornets as LC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first and led 5-1 going to the fifth inning. EMU scored three in the fifth inning to close the gap to one before taking charge in the late innings.
Lynchburg led 6-4 going to the seventh after a fielding error in the sixth scored Lincoln Evans to open the lead back up to two runs. EMU would outscore the Hornets 4-1 the rest of the way to win the game.
LC attempted a rally in the ninth inning trailing 8-6 as Rogers walked and Munn singled to lead off the frame before being replaced by a pinch runner. A sacrifice bunt moved the duo up 90 feet before a strike out got EMU closer Joe Hall one out from ending the game.
Joe Tomasulo singled back up the middle where shortstop Justin Rodriguez had to field it on the run, drifting towards center field. Rogers scored from third but the heads-up thinking of Rodriguez caused him to spin around, throw home, and catch the pinch runner for the final out.
Rogers finished the afternoon with three hits while Caldwell posted three RBI in the two games.
Hall finished 5-for-9 at the plate for EMU (12-11/6-7 ODAC) with two runs scored, an RBI, and a save.
Lynchburg (8-17/4-7) travels to Greensboro College Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference start as Easter Sunday's contest has been postponed.
