Baseball Extends Win Streak, Cruise 11-4 Past W&L
LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team utilized clutched hitting and timely pitching to defeat Washington and Lee University 11-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Thursday night.
The Hornets, winners of three straight and back-to-back ODAC contests, are now 6-7 in league play and mere percentage points behind Hampden-Sydney College for the sixth and final playoff spot.
Drew Shott made the start for W&L, and despite starting innings strong, struggled when runners were on base. Lynchburg hit over .500 for the game in two-out situations and those with runners on scoring position.
Joe Rogers and Jonathan Munn continued their strong week as Rogers doubled with two outs in the third inning, scoring on a Munn single up the middle to give LC a 1-0 lead.
The biggest blast for the Hornets came in the fourth inning after Joe Tomasulo doubled off Shott to lead off the frame. KC Caldwell stepped to the plate and, like Rogers and Munn, proved to be a tough out. The sophomore was locked in a 3-2 count before fighting for his perfect pitch, sending a deep fly ball over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead.
The Generals scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth on a Taylor Rowe single to cut the deficit to 3-2 but Lynchburg would pull away to give Washington and Lee a 1-9 record in its past 10 contests.
Munn finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored while Rogers went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Caldwell had three hits and three RBI while Lincoln Evans had three hits for LC.
Charlie Thieringer (1-0) picked up the win with five innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out two on 78 pitches.
Matt Wasson and Luke Myer each had a pair of hits for Washington and Lee (7-14/5-12).
Lynchburg (11-17/6-7) travels to No. 15 Randolph-Macon College (18-6/9-6) for an ODAC doubleheader Saturday at 12:30 p.m. A pair of wins could bump the Hornets into the ODAC tournament with a home contest against Hampden-Sydney on deck for next week.
