LC Men's Lacrosse Defeats Sewanee 13-4 in NCAA Tourney First Round
LYNCHBURG, VA – The fourth-ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team used a six-goal surge Wednesday evening to post a 13-4 victory over Sewanee in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Chris Cornelius opened the scoring for LC at the 10:40 mark of the first quarter, but Sewanee's Robbie Berndt answered with 6:10 left in the period. The Hornets rattled off the next six goals over the next 20 minutes to take a 7-1 lead early in the third period. Austin Stewart had three scores and Todd Galvin had two goals in the 6-0 run, and Aaron Murphy had three assists.
Sewanee scored three of the next four times cut the lead to 8-4, but Lynchburg sealed the game with the last five tallies of the contest.
Stewart finished with five goals and two assists, while Galvin posted three goals and a helper. Murphy assisted on six scores, and Cornelius had two goals. Colin McGuire, Jacob Fuller and Sean Ahearn also found the back of the net for LC. Murphy breaks his own record for assists in a season and now has 43 on the year.
Hunter Thompson had a game-high eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Chris Hawley made 13 saves for Lynchburg.
Peter Brown had two goals and one assist for Sewanee (11-4) and Robbie Berndt and Cotter Brown also scored. Austin Selby made 15 saves, while Hal Smith won 12 of 19 face-offs and scooped seven ground balls.
