LeMaire Scores Overtime Game-Winner at Roanoke

SALEM, VA – Sophomore Karissa LeMaire scored on a rebound in overtime to lift the Lynchburg College field hockey team to a 2-1 win in its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition of the season at Roanoke College on Tuesday night.

Roanoke played strong to begin the game and nearly went ahead on a shot that hit the left post 17 minutes into play.  The Maroons would get on the board first as Megan Diehl scored an unassisted goal when a cleared save from Lynchburg keeper Beka Hess was sent back into the circle.

The Hornets, however, were very quick to answer just 28 seconds later as Catherine Rogerson sent in a threatening cross that took an awkward bounce from a defender and resulted in a goal for LC, evening the score 1-1.

Hess would come up big for the Hornets in the second half, making numerous diving stops and even stopping a penalty stroke opportunity from the Maroons at the 45:17 mark.

Lynchburg nearly scored in multiple dangerous opportunities prior to the end of regulation, including two chances at untimed penalty corners.  On the final one, Meredith Bradsher's shot went inches wide to the left off the insert, sending the Hornets and Maroons into overtime.

LC possessed the ball for a minute and a half before Kayla Copeman's shot was saved and LeMaire was there to knock in a loose ball in front of the goal. LeMaire's goal is her second overtime game-winner of the season.

Hess finished with 11 saves on the evening, including eight in the second half.  Roanoke's (4-2, 0-2) net-minder Heather Schauder performed well in goal with 15 saves.  Kellie Jasinski was also credited with a defensive save for the home team.  Lynchburg led in both shots (22-17) and penalty corners (15-8).

Lynchburg (7-0, 1-0), ranked #13 in the nation, competes next at home against York College (Pa.) on Saturday at noon.
