Second Half Comeback from Rogerson, Simpao Lead Hornets Past York 5-2
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team, ranked #13 in the nation, scored five times in the second half against York College (Pa.) to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit to win 5-2 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans scored in the fourth minute of play when Ali Posey found Autumn Mallory in a counter-attack for the first goal of the game. York led the Hornets in all categories in the first half including 13-2 in shots, 5-0 on penalty corners, and forced Beka Hess to make seven saves.
The second half was a completely different game for the home team. Despite the steady rain that was falling all game long, the Hornets caught fire. Catherine Rogerson deflected a cross from Nicole Simpao to even the score 1-1 just a minute into the second half. On a short corner two minutes later Kayla Krause set up Simpao who scored from 10 yards out to take the lead 2-1. The freshman scored again in the 52nd minute when she was awarded a penalty stroke opportunity. Simpao shot low to the left and hit the boards to increase the Hornet lead to two. Three minutes later Morgan Lammando scored an unassisted goal making it 4-1.
York, recently rallied to win a game where the Spartans scored three second-half goals, were not down and out just yet. Posey scored from the right side when she spun after receiving an assist from teammate Beth Patrick, bringing the score within two with 15 minutes remaining. Rogerson and the Hornets answered by scoring once more at the 63:54 mark to put the game away. Ashley Heuberger intercepted a pass around the midfield line, brought the ball down the right flank and sent in a perfect cross that found Rogerson on the left side of the goal.
Hess finished with seven saves, while her teammates Hannah Krause and Kayla Krause each were credited with defensive saves in the effort. Offensively, Rogerson had a pair of goals and Simpao finished with two goals and an assist.
York (5-3) had 11 shots on goal, and was led by Posey who finished with a goal and an assist.
Lynchburg (8-0) will face its toughest game of the season Wednesday in a non-conference battle against #3 Salisbury in Newport News, Va. The neutral site competition is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
