Box Score Lynchburg, Va. –The Hornets extended their winning streak to four games after rolling past Mary Baldwin in three sets (25-16, 25,-18, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon. The second game during Homecoming weekend for the volleyball squad was a special one as senior Jen Garrett reached a career milestone with her 1,000th career kill in the first set. The outside hitter currently sits in fourth all-time in kills for the Hornets with 1,012.
With both teams playing on the road the night before, the game started slow on both sides before Lynchburg pulled away with six straight point's mid-set. Garrett was within three kills of reaching 1,000 career kills entering today's game and she reached the milestone with the sixth point and had 10 total kills in the first set. The Hornets finished off the set, 25-16 after freshman Disa Haugsdahl added a kill.
The Hornets got out to a quick start in the second set, scoring six of the first eight points. The set was highlighted by a collective effort for Lynchburg and self-inflicted errors for the Fighting Squirrels. The Hornets at one point led 20-13 before Mary Baldwin made a late push that brought the set within five points before three errors led to a 25- 18 Lynchburg win to go up 2-0.
The third and final set of the match saw a variety of kills, digs, and aces from starters and reserves for the Hornets. Lynchburg was able to build a cushion when they scored eight of 10 points to break a 9-9 tie and go up on the Fighting Squirrels, 15-9. An ace from senior Lynn Walsh secured the third set and the match for the Hornets.
Garrett finished the match with 15 extending her lead for kills in the ODAC and Lynn Walsh continued to dish out assists, adding 19 more to her season total. Other notable Hornet performers were Lauren Sanford who added a team high six digs and senior Mesa Willis quietly had seven kills.
Lynchburg will host ODAC-leading Randolph-Macon for Senior Day this Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Hornets will honor lone senior Jen Garrett and her outstanding career.
