Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Lone senior, Jen Garrett, was honored before the start of the match against Randolph-Macon but the Hornets would lose a heart-breaker in to the Yellow Jackets, 3-2 (20-25, 25-8, 20-25, 25-15, 15-13).
The Hornets snagged the first set thanks to a solid attack and solid service game that kept the Yelow Jackets off balance and out of rhythm. Junior Lynn Walsh recorded seven assists while Garrett and freshman Heaven Jarrell combined for eight kills in the first frame.
Randolph-Macon dominated the second set, holding Lynchburg to single digit points. The Yellow Jackets had 14 kills and one error for a ridiculous hitting percentage of .619 compared to the Hornets -.036.
Lokking to bounce back, the Hornets found a groove and jumped out a seven point lead thanks to two long stretches of points but the Yellow Jackets would not go quietly as they fought back to within two at 22-20. Following a kill and service ace by Garrett, Jarrell sealed the set with an emphatic kill and put her team up 2-1.
Once again Randolph-Macon sprinted out of the gates in an even-numbered set, building a 15-5 lead before Lynchburg was forced to take a timeout. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set but with the big lead the Yellow Jackets snagged the fourth set and forced a fifth set.
Lynchburg fought back to within two at 8-6 before the Yellow Jackets strung together seven points and pushed the Hornets to use two timeouts. The ladies however would not go down easily and fought hard to give Garrett a great Senior Night as they brought the set back to 13-12 thanks to some crucial kills. With each point the team built energy and so did the crowd, which pushed the players even more but the Yellow Jackets showed why they are undefeated in the conference by getting a kill to win the match at 15-13.
Garrett played what could be her final home game Wednesday night. She entered the match 4th all-time in kills, kills/set and total attacks and continued the tear she has been on this year, recording 20 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Walsh racked up 33 assists while Jarrell registered 14 kills and three blocks. Junior Amanda Wrightson and freshman Disa Haugsdahl each blocked four attacks while freshman Lauren Stanford led the team with 17 digs.
The ladies head to Winchester, Va. for a twin bill against Shenandoah and Lebanon Valley, with the first match at 11 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m.
