Volleyball Splits Twin Bill at Shenandoah Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winchester, Va. – Volleyball split their two games at the Shenadoah Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, losing the first to Shenandoah, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12) but sweeping Lebanon Valley in the second, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15).

Lynchburg struggled to find a groove in the match against Shenandoah as the Hornets from the North held the advantage in kills (51-40), assists (51-38) and service aces (12-3).

The only time Lynchburg held a lead was in the second set and Shenandoah did not go down easily, controlling the game until Lynchburg won four straight points including back-to-back kills from freshman Disa Haugsdahl and junior Mesa Willis to close out Shenandoah, 25-23.

Senior Jen Garrett lead the Hornets with 15 kills, three digs and two blocks while Willis smashed 12 kills and added five digs and a block. Commanding the net has been a large part of the Hornets success and they displayed that in the first match recording 12 as a team with junior Amanda Wrightson registered four of her own and Haugsdahl tacking on five more.

The match against Lebanon Valley looked more like the Hornets as of late, keeping a grasp on the tempo and flow of the match while also controlling the statistical advantage in kills (30-27), assists (29-26) and blocks (19-7).

The Flying Dutchmen got out to an 8-5 lead but after numerous errors and crucial kills by Lynchburg, the Hornets went on an 11-1 run and took the lead at 16-9. After each team had another small run each, the first set was finished off bythe Hornets after a combo block from Wrightson and sophomore Amelia Dalton.

The second set was a back and forth affair with neither team getting out in front to far. Garrett smashed five of her 10 kills in the second frame and also recorded three of her five blocks.

The final set was riddled with errors from the Flying Dutchmen after the Hornets once again dominated the net, registering four of their 19 blocks in the third frame.

Haugsdahl added seven more blocks and finished the day with 12 total, putting her at 66 for the season while Wrightson blocked three more attacks for a total of seven, moving her into 5th in the ODAC for blocks per set.

The ladies will look to remain in the top 3 of the ODAC as they return to action on the road in Greensboro, N.C. for a conference match against Guilford on Oct. 26th at 6:30 p.m.
