Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets continue to win as a team, dropping only one set in the last two matches, as they defeat Eastern Mennonite, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16).
The first two sets were tightly contested with the Hornets squeaking out the two victories by a combined five points. Junior Mesa Willis and senior Jen Garrett led the Hornets in the first two frames combining for 13 kills and three blocks while the freshmen combo of Disa Haugsdahl and Heaven Jarrell dominated the net with six kills and five blocks between the two.
Lynchburg benefited off of multiple Royal errors in the third and final set but still brought the heat as they hit .231 as a team and committed only four errors. After jumping out to 15-9 lead Eastern Mennonite brought it back to 15-13, forcing Lynchburg to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Hornets finished off the match on a 10-3 run, capped off by a service ace from Garrett.
A balanced team effort was the key to the Hornet victory as multiple Hornets recorded stats on both sides of the ball. Garrett finished with 11 kills, two digs and two blocks while Haugsdahl smashed five kills and five blocks, making it her second straight game with five blocks.
Juniors Amelia Dalton and Amanda Wrightson combined for six blocks while junior Mesa Willis and Jarrell combined for 15 kills.
The Hornets will enjoy their Fall Break on the West Coast as they head to La Verne University for the Leopard Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8. The ladies will go up against some tough competition including La Verne who is received votes in the latest AVCA poll.
