Hornet Men Keep Rolling with 79-72 win at Hampden-Sydney
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team won its seventh game in its last eight outings Wednesday with a 79-72 victory at Hampden-Sydney College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
The Tigers led 22-19 midway through the first half, but a 17-4 run put the Hornets ahead by 10, 36-26. Lynchburg held a five-point edge at intermission and maintained at least a six-point advantage into the closing minutes. H-SC closed to 74-70 with 49 seconds remaining, but a pair of clutch free throws from freshman Devante' Young extended the lead to six. Senior Omar Kemp denied the Tigers on the other end with a block and Zack Burnett grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 26 seconds left on the game clock. He sank both free throws to seal the win.
Burnett poured in a game-high 23 points, his fifth game in the last eight of 20 points or more. Austen Arnold netted a season-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Alex Graves posted 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Lyndon White pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and handed out four assists. LC shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field on the evening.
Mike Murray hit all 10 of his free throws to score a team-high 21 points for Hampden-Sydney (14-6/6-5 ODAC) while Gray Cheers added 16 points and five rebounds. The Tigers held a 38-24 rebounding edge.
Lynchburg (15-5/8-3 ODAC) hosts Washington & Lee University Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in another conference clash. The Hornets remain in a tie for second place with tonight's victory with five regular-season ODAC games left on the docket.
