Murphy Scores four but #14 LC Men's Lax Defeated 16-8 by #3 RIT
OWINGS MILLS, MD – Despite four goals from senior attack Aaron Murphy, third-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology defeated #14 Lynchburg College 16-8 at the 2016 Greene Turtle Classic, hosted by Stevenson University.
RIT took a 3-2 lead after one period of play, the two LC goals coming from senior attack Austin Stewart.
The Tigers netted the game's next five goals, two each from Kyle Sterzin and Matt Hossack, to open an 8-2 lead early in the third period. Murphy brought his team back with three-straight unassisted goals and make it an 8-5 game with 10:44 remaining in the third period. RIT answered back with the next three goals and entered the fourth quarter ahead 12-6. Lynchburg trimmed the advantage to 13-8, but RIT scored the last three goals.
Evan Lombardo had a goal and an assist for Lynchburg, Jacob Fuller also scored, and Chris Cornelius had an assist. Senior Bobby Distler won 14 of his 24 face-off opportunities and scooped seven ground balls. Cole Barrett caused four turnovers and had three ground balls.
Ryan Lee scored three goals and added an assist for RIT (6-0) and five players had two tallies. Nick Nesbitt made nine saves.
Lynchburg was just 7-of-17 in clears on the day, while the Tigers succeeded in 15-of-19 attempts.
The Hornets (3-4) are back in action Saturday at the Greene Turtle Classic, facing off with sixth-ranked York College (PA) at 3 p.m. LC has a very challenging schedule in the early going, with five top-10 opponents in the first eight contests.
