LC Women's Tennis Outlasts Hollins 5-4 for important ODAC win
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's tennis team scored an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win Friday, outlasting Hollins University 5-4.
The Hornets captured two of the three doubles matches, as Erika Hadland and Kelsey Dowling and Valeria Erostegui and Lilli Altenburg earned victories at #2 and #3, respectively.
Hadland rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at #2 singles, and Altenburg and Jerica Simmons didn't drop a game in wins at #4 and #6. Dowling battled to three sets at #5 singles, but eventually her Hollins opponent won 6-2, 2-6, 10-3.
"I started out my singles match slow," said Hadland. "I knew there was a lot of pressure on the team to win today, and coach helped re-focus me I was able to pull out a win."
The victory puts the Lynchburg women squarely in the hunt to make the ODAC Tournament, as the top eight teams advance to post-season play. LC's 3-3 conference record is good to tie for fifth place currently with four matches remaining on the schedule over the next eight days.
"Despite losing a key member of the team for the rest of the season, our team stepped up today and got a very important victory," said head coach Josef Manilla. "We had lost two matches in a row coming into to today, so it was very nice to get a win as we move into the rest of the season."
The Hornets (9-7) have a busy weekend ahead, hosting Roanoke College Saturday and Shenandoah University Sunday. Both ODAC matches are scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
