Box Score Norfolk, Va. -- Lynchburg Field Hockey snapped a three-game losing streak after unleashing an offensive bombardment on Virginia Wesleyan, earning the victory 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Lynchburg was hot out of the gate, earning a corner and firing two shots just two minutes into the game. After 16 minutes of play, the the only thing had changed was the clock but that all changed after freshman Katelynn Fuhr broke open the scoring with her first goal of the season.
The offensive was clicking in the first half and unleashed nine shots but the Marlins were able to hang around thanks to goalkeeper Skye Swain who made seven saves in the first half and 10 overall after replacing Samantha Hollenzer just four minutes into the game.
The second half gave all the fans something to cheer about as both teams combined for 12 shots, eight penalty corners and six goals.
Sophomore Nikki Simpao started the scoring with great piece of individual skill as she dribbled into the circle and beat the keeper, giving Lynchburg a two goal advantage. The second-year forward now has 11 points in her last four games and leads the Hornets with 28 points this season. Virginia Wesleyan answered with a goal of their own after Caitlyn Hogge scored on a deflection, drawing the Marlins to within one at 2-1.
The celebration was short lived because within five minutes of the Marlins goal, junior Karissa LeMaire found Simpao and junior Hannah Krause on two different corners as the Lynchburg lead grew to 4-1. The final goals for the Hornets were a result of sophomore Isabella Eldridge and Simpao linking up within the circle.
Taylor Marshall added a goal late for the Marlins but the Hornets were too far ahead to stage a comeback.
Senior Beka Hess recorded two saves and moved to 3-3 on the season with the victory while senior Alyssa Mills added two shots in the blowout.
With the result the Hornets move to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference and the Marlins sink to 2-4 and 0-1. Lynchburg heads to Fredricksburg, Va. for a neutral site game against Salisbury on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 4:00 pm.
