Box Score Emory, Va. -- The Hornets bounced back from a heart-breaking loss to nationally-ranked Mary Washington last week with a sound victory over Emory & Henry, 3-1 (28-26, 18-25, 29-27, 25-15).
The Wasps shutout the Hornets last year but this time around Lynchburg had multiple players contribute on the attack and on defense as the all-around team effort helped earn the victory Friday night.
The first set was neck and neck and momentum favored neither side as the largest lead was three early on in the set for the Hornets and the stats supported the deadlock as both teams recorded he same number of kills. Senior Jen Garrett had nearly half of her kills in the first set, finishing with seven.
The Wasps found a groove in the second set, hitting .414 while also stringing together a 6-1 run in the middle of the set which helped them grab the second set, 25-18 and even the match.
The match was a chess game as both coaches were making subs left and right to find the right combination on the court and the third set was a perfect example as the Hornets had to get to 29 points before claiming the set. Freshman Disa Haugsdahl continued to impress in her first year as she helped the cause with four kills and two blocks in the third set.
Lynchburg jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead in the fourth set and never let Emory & Henry back in. Freshman Heaven Jarrell has taken on a new role as outside hitter and Friday night the first-year player had her best night in the new position recording 11 kills, three of which came in the final set helping the Hornets win the set and clinch the match.
Junior Lynn Walsh averaged just over seven assists a set and finished the match with 29 while also tallying 11 digs. Haugsdahl had a great night in the middle as she registered eight kills and five blocks while Garrett was all over the court as she logged 15 kills, 10 digs and three blocks totaling 16.5 points. The freshmen duo of Lauren Stanford and Ragan Rudisill combined for 19 digs and four of Lynchburg's six service aces.
The Hornets improve to 10-4 and 3-1 in the conference while Emory & Henry drops to 10-8 and 2-3.
Lynchburg returns to action when they host Eastern Mennonite on Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. and that home contest has been designated as a Dig Pink game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
