Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Four Hornets earned points as they downed the Eagles, 2-0, on Shellenberger Field on a beautiful Thursday night.
The track was packed with students wearing red in the first Code Red game of the year and the Field Hockey team did not disappoint. Junior Lacey Elliott and sophomore Mallory Henderson found the back of the net while sophomore Kayla Copeman and junior Karissa LeMaire each collected assists in the ODAC matchup.
Elliott opened the scoring at the 7:45 mark as Copeman was able to get to the left edge of the circle and whip a cross in. The ball bounced around as the goalie got a piece, as did a few Bridgewater defenders but Elliott was able to corral the loose ball and rattle the wodden backstop in the net, giving her two goals in the early stages of the season.
The Lynchburg defense was solid all night long and did not allow Bridgewater to enter the circle but only a handful of times in the first half. Junior Hannah Krause was able to stop multiple Eagle attacks by herself and turn them into counter attacks for the Hornets. Senior Ashley Heuberger and freshman Katelynn Fuhr also helped hold down the backline as the team recorded their first shutout of the year and now holds a 0.49 goals against average.
The Hornets made the packed track erupt in celebration as they put another goal on the scoreboard. LeMaire was well outside the circle but lasered a pass in anyways. The ball whizzed past two Bridgewater sticks, coming to rest on Henderson's stick and after putting a move on the keeper, she netted her first goal of the season putting Lynchburg up 2-0.
Being down by two, the Eagles began to press forward. They had multiple breakaways with numbers but could not find the open player fast enough or were intercepted by a Hornet defenseman.
Hornet goalkeeper Beka Hess's only real test came when Elizabeth Washington of Bridgewater fired a shot that was raised into the air which forced Hess to raise her stick and deflect away the attempt on goal.
The Eagles attack was led by Emily Matisons and Laura Gretz who had five and two shots respectively. Bridgewater goalkeeper Ali Bishop moved to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
Copeman and sophomore Nikki Simpao led the Hornets in shots as they combined for six while seven other Lynchburg players were able to get off one shot each.
The Hornets move to 2-0 and 1-0 in the conference on the year and look to continue a their strong start as they host the Crusaders of Alvernia University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 11 am.
