Women's tennis knocks off VWU, wins fourth straight

Virginia Beach, Va. -- The Lynchburg College women's tennis team made it four wins in a row Friday afternoon with a 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory at Virginia Wesleyan.

Sophomore Christina Harris (Falls Church, Va.) remained undefeated on the season at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She took down the Marlins' Makayla Veliz, 6-0, 6-1, in singles and, partnering with freshman Caroline Guill (Louisa, Va.), owned an 8-3 decision at the top doubles spot.

The Hornets' No. 3 doubles team of juniors Lilli Altenburg (Lexington, Va.) and Reagan Coon (Churchville, Va.) gave Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, scraping away a 9-3 (3) win.

Lynchburg was able to split the singles matches down the middle thanks to wins by sophomore Halle Lavieri (Killingworth, Conn.) at No. 2 and Altenburg at No. 4.

The win, LC's fourth in a row, puts the Hornets at 7-3 overall this season and 3-0 in ODAC play. They'll look to run the season-best win streak to five at home on Tuesday, March 20 versus Sweet Briar. That match begins at 2 p.m.
