Women's tennis wins fifth straight, downing Bridgewater

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College women's tennis team picked up a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Wednesday afternoon, taking down Bridgewater, 7-2, to improve to 4-0 in league play.

The win marks the fifth-straight victory for the Hornets.

"I'm so proud of our girls!" LC coach Chris Johnson said. "We talk a lot about things like trusting the process and mental strength. Our team got it right today. It was a big day for Hornets tennis!"

Lynchburg began the match with a sweep through the doubles matches and carried that momentum to take four of six in singles competition.

No. 2 duo of freshman Ellen Druebbisch (Jamestown, N.C.) and junior Lilli Altenburg (Lexington, Va.) highlighted the early going, grinding out a 9-7 victory as LC cruised at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.

Lynchburg cemented the win with quick victories by sophomore Christina Harris (Falls Church, Va.) at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, and Druebbisch at No. 5, 6-0, 6-3, but the Hornets weren't done. Altenburg chipped in a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, and junior Sarah Wyly (Leesburg, Va.) fought to a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10) win at No. 3 to add an exclamation point to the victorious day.

Lynchburg (8-3, 4-0 ODAC) will enjoy a week off before returning to ODAC play on Thursday, April 5 versus Sweet Briar. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the LC Tennis Courts.
