Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- The Lynchburg College men's tennis team got back on the winning track Monday afternoon with a 6-3 win over previously undefeated Baldwin Wallace in the Spring Tennis Fest at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center on Hilton Head.
The Hornets trailed 2-1 after doubles, freshman Luke Sablik (Vienna, Va.) and sophomore Zack Shane (Falls Church, Va.) earning the win, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
But Lynchburg came alive in singles competition. Junior Nick Savino (Bristol, Conn.) was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6, and the victory set off a chain reaction. Lynchburg won five of the six matches to seal the dual win.
"The team represented Lynchburg very well. Everyone was their backs against the wall at some point, but we were able to fight back and get some big wins," Savino said. "This win will give us momentum going into the rest of the Spring Break matches and going into the start of the conference season."
Shane was victorious in three sets at No. 4, and sophomore Juan Borga (Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA) and Sablik cinched matches in second-set tiebreaks at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Senior Will Nsoesie (Boonsboro, Md.) won a tough 7-5, 7-5 decision at No. 3.
"I was really proud of our men today," Lynchburg head coach Chris Johnson said. "Each court gave everything physically. We are working on building team culture and we certainly put a big brick in that foundation today."
The Hornets (3-4) will be back in spring break action Thursday, March 8 at 2 p.m., when they'll take on St. John Fisher at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Center.
