Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's tennis team started the spring season strong Friday afternoon with a 8-1 dispatching of Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Ferrum at the Crosswhite Athletic Center.
The Hornets swept through doubles play as sophomore Daniel Christian (Jamestown, N.C.) and senior Nick Savino (Bristol, Conn.) won a hard-fought 8-6 decision at No. 1, while senior Bryce Barber (Evington, Va.) and sophomore Shawn Ikegami (Kumamoto, JAPAN) rolled to an 8-1 win at the second slot.
Senior Colton Mullins (Appomattox, Va.) and sophomore Vincent Oliver (Springfield, Va.) didn't drop a game at No. 3, winning 8-0.
Savino and Oliver stayed dominant in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 matches at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Mullins at No. 2 and junior Brad Carson (Severna Park, Md.) at No. 6 won 6-1, 6-0, while Christian tallied a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Ferrum's lone point came at the top singles spot, where the Panthers' Riley Kern won the first set over Barber, 6-2, and took a game in the second before Barber retired from the match.
Lynchburg's men's tennis team will be back in action Friday, March 1 with another ODAC contest at Guilford. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Quakers' Greensboro, N.C. campus.
