Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- University of Lynchburg's women's tennis team stayed unbeaten in 2019 thanks to dominant doubles play in a 5-4 win over previously undefeated Mount Union Thursday at Spring Tennis Fest at Hilton Head High School.
The Hornets leave the Palmetto State and Spring Break with a pair of victories.
Lynchburg's women got the job done early in doubles play, sweeping all three of the matches.
Junior Christina Harris (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore Caroline Guill (Louisa, Va.) won easily, 8-1, at No. 1.
Senior Sarah Wyly (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore Emily Hoang (Sterling, Va.) followed with a 8-5 triumph at the second flight, while seniors Lilli Altenburg (Lexington, Va.) and Reagan Coon (Churchville, Va.) won handily at No. 3, 8-2.
The Hornets had a tougher time in singles action.
Harris won her first set easily before falling in the second to force a tiebreak at No. 1, which she won to take a point, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (5).
The early going didn't treat the rest of the Hornets well as Guill, Wyly, and freshman Alissa Anderson (Norfolk, Va.) lost in straight sets at Nos. 2, 3 and 4.
At the fifth spot, Coon came up clutch to seal the match, coming back from a first-set defeat to win 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7).
Lynchburg will return home for the resumption of classes next week before heading to Staunton, Va., Thursday, March 21 for a non-conference clash with Mary Baldwin.
