Chitwood breaks HR record in No. 20 softball's win

Box Score

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's softball team made use of a pair of historic performances Friday evening for a six-inning, 9-0 victory over Guilford in the Hornets' first ballgame of the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.

Senior first baseman Mackenzie Chitwood (Ferrum, Va.) homered twice to break the Lynchburg and Old Dominion Athletic Conference career home runs record. Her second home run was a two-run shot that scored the game-ending runs. She now has 39 in her four-year career.

The homers broke the record set by 2007 graduate Caroline Cubbage, who was inducted into the Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame last fall.

"I think it just shows how strong Lynchburg softball is and how we've recruited such good players," Chitwood said.

Junior right-hander Alex Cisar (Sykesville, Md.) no-hit the Quakers, allowing just two baserunners and striking out three.

Cisar credited senior catcher Brittany Coffey (Manassas, Va.) with keeping her steady throughout the game.

"I know she knows me more than myself when I'm pitching," Cisar said of the All-ODAC catcher. "I know I trust everything she says, and I trust my defense behind me."

It was Lynchburg's first no-hitter since Cisar and Stephanie Hogan combined for a five-inning perfect game against Sweet Briar, March 28, 2017.

Coffey put Lynchburg ahead early with a first-inning, three-run home run.

Lynchburg added on another run in the third when freshman designated player Haley Drew (Appomattox, Va.) slammed an RBI single up the middle.

Chitwood made it 6-0 Hornets an inning later with a two-run homer down the left-field line, and junior left fielder Carol Oberhelman (Washington Township, N.J.) drove a run in with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Chitwood then homered again, this time to center field on a line drive, to end the game via the eight-run, five-inning rule.

The third-seeded Hornets move on to a 1:30 p.m. date in the winners' bracket with No. 2 seed Emory & Henry at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex's Field 3 Saturday.
