Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Alexis Brown's 48th-minute penalty stroke proved the difference as University of Lynchburg's field hockey team held off visiting Lebanon Valley for its first victory of the 2019 season Saturday afternoon.
Brown's stroke broke a 1-1 tie, and the Hornets (1-0) held on with strong defense to preserve the victory.
Sophomore Kaylie Truitt, in her first game at the forward position, scored Lynchburg's opening goal, a fourth-minute finish off some fancy stick work in the arc.
Lebanon Valley tied the game 29 seconds before halftime when Danielle Alba drove the right baseline and found Ashlee Sheibley, who finished just in front of the cage.
Lynchburg goalkeeper Laurel Nicks held LVC (0-1) off the board in the second half, as both saves to her credit came after intermission.
The Hornets out-shot the Flying Dutchmen 16-5.
Lynchburg, which received votes in the NFHCA's preseason coaches poll, will head north to Pennsylvania next weekend for games at Albright and Alvernia.
