FOREST, Va. --Â University of Lynchburg senior goalkeeper Shay Schoones was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season following her performance in the Hornets' 3-1 victory over Randolph-Macon.
Schoones anchored the Lynchburg defense in its ODAC opener, turning away 13 of the 14 shots she faced in the cage. The senior finished the contest with a .929 save percentage while helping the Hornets improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Randolph-Macon tested Schoones throughout the afternoon, placing 14 of its 19 shots on goal. After allowing the Yellow Jackets' lone goal in the first quarter, Schoones shut the door for the remainder of the contest.
The Lynchburg goalkeeper made three saves in both the second and third quarters before delivering five more stops in the fourth. Her work in the cage proved especially important late, as Randolph-Macon generated seven shots in the final period while attempting to erase Lynchburg's two-goal advantage.Â
Schoones also helped withstand a late push from the Yellow Jackets that included multiple shots on goal and a penalty stroke. Randolph-Macon was unable to capitalize, allowing Lynchburg to close out the 3-1 road victory and begin conference play with a win.Â
The honor marks Schoones' third ODAC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season, and the fourth collective weekly award for the Hornets. This is the second consecutive season Lynchburg has had a student-athlete receive three ODAC weekly awards, with Anna Dorrestijn receiving three in 2025.Â
