Field hockey falls to Alvernia in shootout

Reading Pa. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team lost a nailbiter, 3-2, to Alvernia Saturday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field as the game was decided by a shootout after two overtimes were not enough to decide a winner.

Lynchburg was down late in the first quarter after Alvernia's Erica Groves and Madison Potthoff each scored a goal to give the Golden Wolves an early 2-0 advantage.

The Hornets (1-1) responded at the end of the second quarter with a goal from freshman midfielder Kessa Romero to cut the Lynchburg deficit in half going into the break.

Lynchburg junior Jackie Lerro put up three shots in the third quarter but to no avail. She totaled eight shots on the day with five of them on goal.

The Hornets tied the game in the fourth quarter on a goal from junior Emily Dudley, sending the game into overtime knotted at 2.

After neither team scored in the sudden-death overtime, the match went to a shootout with Alvernia eventually winning the ultimate decider, 3-1.

The Hornets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Gene L. Shirk Stadium as they take on the Lions of Albright College in Reading, Pa.
