Box Score Newport News, Va. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team dropped a 2-0 out-of-conference decision Friday evening at Christopher Newport.
The Hornets earned a 6-4 advantage on penalty corners and were even with the Captains in shots at nine apiece, but the visitors were unable to mount any series threats on the goal, logging just one shot on frame in the contest.
Lynchburg was the aggressor early on, taking all four shots recorded in the first quarter. CNU turned the tables in the second and scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute, taking that 1-0 lead into halftime. The Captains added an insurance score in the 34th minute and held on for victory.
Hornets goalkeeper Kayla Brady kept the away team in the game with four saves, and Madison Mark also recorded a defensive save for Lynchburg. Jackie Lerro took a team-best three shots.
It marked the first time the Lynchburg field hockey team was shut out since a 2019 NCAA tournament quarterfinal loss at then-No. 3 Salisbury, also a 2-0 defeat.
Lynchburg (10-5) falls to 8-10 all-time against CNU and has dropped four in a row in Newport News. The Hornets will look to get back on the winning track Sunday at noon with another non-conference contest against Wooster. Lynchburg will celebrate Senior Day for the program's three fourth-year players prior to the game.
