No. 18 field hockey tops Wooster on Senior Day

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- Five different University of Lynchburg field hockey players found the back of the cage Sunday afternoon as the 18th-ranked Hornets celebrated Senior Day with a 5-1 victory over Wooster on Shellenberger Field.

Jackie Lerro got the scoring started for Lynchburg with a 13th-minute goal assisted by Brittany Claybaugh, and the Hornets took their 1-0 lead into the first-quarter break.

Lynchburg then tripled its lead in the second, scoring twice in a 52-second span late in the quarter. Franka Weronek's goal on an Emily Yanes helper made it 2-0 Hornets in the 27th minute, and in the 28th, Skylar Dise scored after a penalty corner injection from Emma Strouse, the first of Strouse's three assists on the day. Lynchburg led 3-0 at the half.

The Hornets continued to pour it on after the half, scoring again in the 42nd minute after another corner with a flawless sequence from Strouse to Lerro to Emily Dudley, who knocked it past the goaltender to make it 4-0.

In the 51st, Strouse facilitated Lynchburg's fifth score, driving the left end-line and shoveling the ball across to Sydney Metz, who propelled it over the line.

Wooster spoiled the shutout on Ashley Reynolds' 55th-minute goal, but the Hornets held off any further damage to lay claim to their 11th victory of the 2021 season.

Prior to the game, the Hornets honored their three seniors in the Class of 2022: Alex Boatwright, Claybaugh, and Kaylie Truitt.

The Hornets' victory also marked No. 625 in the career of legendary Lynchburg head coach Enza Steele. It was the second milestone victory over Wooster for Steele, whose Hornets bested Wooster on the road in 2019 for her 600th-career win.

Lynchburg (11-5) will look to stay on the winning track with a quick turnaround tomorrow; the Hornets will play host to another non-conference foe, Mary Washington, at 7 p.m. It will be the field hockey program's CODE RED game.
