Box Score Gambier, Ohio -- Emily Dudley put in the golden goal in the 62nd minute, leading the 19th-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Kenyon Sunday afternoon on the road.
Lynchburg got off to a strong start but wasn't able to cash in on any of its eight first-quarter shots.
The Hornets did break through in the second, however, when freshman Franka Weronek scored on an Emily Yanes assist to secure a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg took that lead into halftime and protected it through the third, Kayla Brady making saves on both balls sent her way in the quarter, and the Hornets mounted a consistent threat again in the fourth, out-shooting their hosts by a 10-3 margin.
It was Kenyon that bested the defense, however, on a 56th-minute Hannah Paprotna goal to force the game into overtime.
The extra period was all Lynchburg. The Hornets earned a penalty corner almost immediately and kept the pressure on the KC defense, managing three shots before Dudley put the game away on a Jackie Lerro assist.
The win was the fifth straight for the Hornets and moved Lynchburg's record to 6-3 on the season. The team is 3-0 in overtime this season and has won seven straight OT thrillers, a streak dating back to September of 2019.
Lynchburg's field hockey team will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play in the midweek, hitting the road again for Bridgewater Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
