Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's tennis team got back on track Tuesday with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Bridgewater.
The victory ended a 16-match losing streak to their Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals, a run that began in 2004.
The Hornets got off to a good start in doubles play, earning wins at both the second and third flights. Graduate student Colton Mullins and senior Vincent Oliver battled to an 8-4 win at No. 2, while sophomore Cooper Brewen and senior Matthew Manos won 8-3 at the bottom tier.
Bridgewater took a 3-2 lead in the match after quick singles wins at Nos. 1 and 4, but Lynchburg turned the tide as individual play wore on. Manos turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth flight to even the match, and senior Daniel Christian won easily, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 to put the Hornets ahead.
Oliver clinched the match for the hosts, earning a come-from-behind 7-6 win in his first set at No. 5 before finishing in dominant form with a 6-0 second-set victory.
Lynchburg (4-1, 3-1 ODAC) will look to continue its great start Sunday when Virginia Wesleyan comes to town.
