Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg field hockey won its 10th game of the season, 2-0, Tuesday night as the Hornets played host to Sweet Briar College in a game that was lost due to COVID-19 protocols earlier this year.
Lynchburg (10-0) got out to an early lead as the Hornets' Faith Seery scored an unassisted goal at the 6:57 mark in the first period. Lynchburg took six more shots in the period, but none found the back of the Vixen cage.
The Hornets and the Vixens (2-5) played a scoreless second and third period as defense for both teams was on display. However, in the fourth period, Lynchburg broke through for a second goal as Brittany Claybaugh found Aaryn Boatwright in the circle who put it past the Sweet Briar goal keeper to put the Hornets up 2-0 and sealing the victory.
Lynchburg outshot Sweet Briar 27-1 in the contest. Rosemary Austin, the Vixens goalkeeper, made 16 saves in 18 opportunities on the night. Kayla Brady earned the win for her efforts as the freshman made one save in her only opportunity.
Tuesday night's game marked 100 years that the two institutions have competed against one another in field hockey, a rivalry that began in the fall of 1920.
The Hornets complete their 2021 season with a perfect overall record of 10-0 and the program's 21st Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship title, won Sunday over Washington and Lee on Shellenberger Field.
