Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Jackie Lerro corralled a stray penalty corner insert and took the ball into the arc nearly 7 minutes into overtime and scored to hand the 19th-ranked University of Lynchburg a 4-3 win over No. 13 Ursinus Friday night at the Liberty University Field Hockey Complex.
It was the second goal of the game for Lerro, who also made two assists on the evening.
Lynchburg (2-3) jumped out to an early lead thanks to the first-career goal for freshman Riley Winefordner in the fifth minute. The goal came shortly following a penalty corner as the insert went to Lerro, who played a touch to Kessa Romero. The junior played a sharp ball in from the top of the arc that Winefordner deflected into the cage.
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the quarter break, but Ursinus quickly flipped the tables with goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes. Lynchburg came up with the equalizer, however, just 34 seconds later when Emma Strouse's cross bounced around to Lerro, who batted it past the Bears goalie. The goal snapped a four-game scoreless streak for Lerro, whose last score came in the springtime Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinals to top Shenandoah and send the Hornets into the conference title game. The teams remained tied into halftime.
After the break, both teams hunkered down. Ursinus out-shot the Hornets, 4-3, in the third period, but neither team put the ball into the cage.
Lynchburg reassumed the lead in the fourth on a 49th-minute goal by Emily Dudley on a Lerro assist.
Ursinus tied the game at 3 in the 53rd minute thanks to a Mary Lauren Franz, but Lynchburg goalie Kayla Brady made seven of her 10 saves in the fourth to keep the Hornets in the game.
The Hornets dominated the overtime period, earning three penalty corners and taking seven shots in the sudden-victory stanza before Lerro's goal won it.
Lynchburg improves to 9-1 on the Liberty field since the Hornets began playing a series of home games on the Astroturf at LU in 2017. The Hornets have defeated three ranked programs in that stretch. It was the third-career golden goal for Lerro.
The Hornets will enjoy a week stretch without a game before returning to the Liberty University Field Hockey Complex Saturday, Sept. 25 for a 4 p.m. bout with No. 17-ranked Centre.
