Box Score Winchester, Va. -- Anyone named in the same sentence as Wayne Proffitt '67 is in historic company. University of Lynchburg head men's basketball coach Hilliary Scott won his 200th-career game Monday night and joins Proffitt as the only coach in program history with 200 wins.
However, Coach Scott and his Hornets had to overcome a halftime deficit to reach the impressive milestone.
Carrington Young scored two buckets early for the Hornets driving through the lane for layups, but his team found itself down 13-6 at the 15:21 mark.
While Young was having success barreling to the rim and scoring in the paint, Lynchburg found success from downtown as it tried to orchestrate an early comeback.
Isräel Lockamy and Tharon Suggs sank 3-pointers and cut the deficit to 17-15. All together, the road Hornets sank five deep balls in the first half as they tried to keep pace with the home Hornets but trailed 39-35 at the break.
Out of the locker room, Coach Scott set up his defense in a 2-3 zone that flustered Shenandoah the rest of the way.
The home team shot 1-12 (8.3%) from deep after halftime against the zone. Lynchburg also forced five turnovers in the second scoring 16 points off the takeaways.
Trailing by nine early in the final half, T.C. Thacker scored his first points of the evening with a layup and an and-1.
Midway through the second, Noah Bullock opened up a 9-0 run as Lynchburg stormed back. During the run, Suggs nailed a 3-pointer from a Lockamy assist. After sinking a free throw, Young came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast finishing with a reverse layup on the other end. Young's impressive plays on both sides of the court drew the Hornets close, 61-59. On the next offensive possession, Lockamy splashed his fourth shot from downtown giving Lynchburg its first lead of the game, 62-61, with 8:14 to play. The graduate student from Wake Forest, N.C. scored 21 points on the night.
Shenandoah briefly regained a lead after Lockamy's 3-pointer. Jaylen Williams put Shenandoah up 64-62 with a free throw and layup with 6:55 to go. Williams finished the game as Shenandoah's leading scorer with 26 points.
However, Lynchburg ended the game on a 22-4 run to prevail with an 84-68 victory. Suggs led the way during Lynchburg's closing statement. He scored 14 points in the final 6:39 and finished the evening with a game-high 29 points.
Carrington Young scored 12 points with eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Young enjoyed his best scoring output since Feb. 19, 2021.
Coach Scott led his team to a second-straight win and 10th of the season.
Coach Scott, a Lynchburg-native, took over the helm in 2008-09. With a winning record in each of the last ten seasons, Scott has the fourth-most wins in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference among active coaches. The Hornets won the 2016 ODAC Championship under Scott's supervision and earned a trip to the championship game in 2020-21. Scott also brought his team to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 for the first time since 1979.
Scott and his Hornets (10-5, 4-2 ODAC) look for win No. 201 on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at Randolph beginning at 7 p.m.
