Box Score Harrisonburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with its seventh-straight win, a 9-1 throttling of Eastern Mennonite Friday evening on the road.
Marlou Wendriks led the Hornet attack with four goals – the freshman's third game of the season with a hat trick or better – while Kessa Romero scored twice and Emily Yanes had a goal and an assist.
Lynchburg wasted no time gaining the lead. After winning a penalty corner just 48 seconds in, Ryleigh Cameron snuffed out a failed clearance and shoveled the ball past the defense for a first-minute goal. Yanes made it a 2-0 Lynchburg lead in the 14th minute, but EMU got on the board with 34 seconds remaining in the quarter to head into the second with a one-goal disadvantage.
The Hornets took control in the second period. Wendriks scored twice, once on a Yanes helper and another unassisted, and Romero put in her first on a Mallory Lamb assist to make it a 5-1 Lynchburg lead at the half.
Wendriks scored twice more in the third, Franka Weronek added another insurance goal, and Romero added the cherry on top in the 53rd minute to complete the win.
Eight different Lynchburg players registered multiple shots on goal in the game, helping the Hornets to a 42-2 advantage in shots.
Lynchburg puts a bow on the regular season with a 16-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Hornets will learn their path to a 22nd ODAC championship Saturday when the tournament field is announced by the conference office.
