Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- Emily Yanes' 53rd-minute goal proved the difference as the No. 19-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team took down No. 13 Washington and Lee, 3-2, at home Wednesday night in the Hornets' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.
Yanes' score gave Lynchburg the narrow advantage in a game the Hornets dominated on the stat line. Lynchburg out-shot the Generals by a 26-11 margin and earned 11 penalty corners to W&L's two.
But it was Washington and Lee that got on the board first. After a scoreless first quarter, the Generals' Peyton Tysinger and Freddie Tobeason scored in a 3-minute span for a two-goal lead.
Lynchburg regained some momentum before halftime when Aaryn Boatwright crossed over a defender after a corner and beat the goalie to cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through.
The second half was all Hornets. Lynchburg quickly evened the score at 2-2 off a 32nd-minute corner. Brittany Claybaugh's insert went to Yanes, who took a shot. Sarah McCollum was right in place in front of the cage to deflect it in for the game-tying goal.
Lynchburg continued to control the contest into the fourth quarter, but Generals goalie Abby Long made five of her nine saves to keep W&L in the game. Yanes broke through for the game-winner in the 53rd minute. Long saved Yanes' original shot, but the rebound came directly back to the senior, who hit it past the keeper into the cage.
Kayla Brady made three saves in goal for the Hornets. The win kept Lynchburg's home win streak against W&L alive, extending it to 16 games.
Lynchburg (9-2, 1-0 ODAC) will face another tough test Saturday afternoon at 3 when No. 17-ranked Shenandoah visits Shellenberger Field. The program will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game.
