Box Score Ferrum, Va. -- University of Lynchburg senior Dow Dunton contributed a double-double against Ferrum as the Hornets fell to the Panthers Wednesday night.
Carrington Young, who played five seasons with Ferrum before transfering to Lynchburg, was honored during Ferrum's Senior Day celebration. The graduate student scored Lynchburg's first points of the game with a layup.
With 13:33 to go in the opening half, Miles Taylor layed one in to give the Hornets a 10-5 lead.
Midway through the first, Ferrum overtook Lynchburg with a 13-12 lead. However, Noah Bullock responded with a 3-pointer on an assist from Dunton. Jordan Parham also sank a 3 and gave Lynchburg its largest lead of the game, 22-16.
The Hornets could not connect again from deep in the first, and Ferrum exploded out to a 34-24 lead before halftime.
Lynchburg also trailed Ferrum on Feb. 3 in the previous meeting at home but were able to complete the comeback. The Hornets were 6-6 in games they trailed at the break entering the day.
Tharon Suggs brought his team back within single digits with a 3-pointer to open the second half. The Panthers also connected from deep and built their largest lead, 48-36, with a 3 from Ayden Gamble midway through the second. Gamble ended the night with five points while James Smith Jr. and Michael Spraggins led the Panthers with 24 and 20 points respectively.
Once again, Bullock pulled Lynchburg closer with a make from deep on the next possession. The junior guard ended the game with a season-high 11 points and three assists.
Bullock sank another 3 while Dunton added six points over a 15-4 run for the Hornets. Dunton's third make of the run put Lynchburg down 55-54 with 4:42 to play.
Ferrum kept pace with Lynchburg from there and led 62-60 as the Hornets missed the would-be game-tying shot with 0:04 left. The Hornets had one more look at overtime after Ferrum missed a free throw, but the Panthers held on for the two-point win.
Dunton scored 15 points with 10 rebounds while Suggs added 12 points.
Lynchburg (14-10, 8-7 ODAC) will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. against Va. Wesleyan. The Hornets are tied for fifth in the conference with Roanoke holding the tie-breaker.
