Men's basketball stumbles against Randolph

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's basketball dropped a home game to Randolph, 80-76, on Tuesday night.

Cam Savage came off the bench and led the Hornets with 15 points, but Lynchburg could not contain the WildCats.

The Hornets started the game hot with Carrington Young scoring on the first possession. Lynchburg held Randolph scoreless for the first 3:00 and built an 8-0 lead.

After Dow Dunton came up with a steal at the 12:33 mark, Savage knocked down a 3-pointer. The transfer student from Reston put his team up by double digits with a jumper on the next possession. Savage made another one from downtown 2:39 later.

Landon Sutton also connected from deep thanks to an assist from Jalen Hargrove and the Hornets were up 26-17 with 7:28 to play. However, Randolph outscored Lynchburg 14-7 in the closing minutes of the first and trailed by one at halftime.

Out of the break, Randolph took a lead off a 3-pointer from Jordan Phillips-McLoyd and a layup from Danny Bickey, the visitors' leading scorer.

With 6:08 remaining, the WildCats created their biggest lead, 69-54.

Looking for a comeback with 5:17 to play, Elijah Davis drained a 3-pointer off an assist from Trey Pittman and started a run. Pittman, Isräel Lockamy, and Tharon Suggs also scored during a 10-point explosion for the Hornets. Suggs nailed another shot with 2:21 and cut the deficit to four.

Despite 11 second-half points from Suggs, Lynchburg could not regain the lead. Randolph scored six points in the final minute to steal a game away from Lynchburg on Wayne Proffitt Court, 80-76. Randolph won its first game over Lynchburg since 2016.

Suggs scored 13 points on the night, while Savage added an assist, steal, and two rebounds to his team-high 15 points. Carrington Young was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards while also dishing out two assists and snagging two steals. Dunton scored six points and led the team with 10 rebounds. He hauled in double-digit rebounds for the sixth time in his career.

Lynchburg (13-8, 7-5 ODAC) sits in fifth place in the conference and has a pivotal road matchup with Guilford slated for Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
