Box Score Owings Mills, Md. -- Aaryn Boatwright scored twice, once in the second quarter and again in the third, to lead University of Lynchburg's field hockey team to its fourth win of the 2022 season, 2-1, at Stevenson Wednesday evening.
The host Mustangs came out strongly, holding Lynchburg's high-powered offense without a shot in the first quarter. The Hornets quickly changed that in the second period, earning a penalty corner just over a minute in and keeping the pressure on in the quarter's early going until Boatwright sizzled a shot into the cage shortly after a second penalty corner.
Lynchburg earned five more corners but could not add to the lead before halftime, taking the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Hornets continued to control the game after intermission before Boatwright broke through again. The defender took a 34th-minute feed from freshman Aurora Balsamo to extend the lead with Boatwright's second goal of the game and Balsamo's first collegiate assist.
Stevenson's Haley Palmer cut the lead in half, breaking up the shutout with a 57th-minute goal, but Lynchburg didn't allow another shot as the Hornets locked down the win.
Kayla Brady made three saves in front of the cage for Lynchburg, while Ryleigh Cameron and Kessa Romero matched Boatwright's game-best three shots.
Lynchburg, which received votes in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III coaches poll, moved to 4-1 on the young season with the win and will return home for a weekend of stiff competition with No. 3-ranked Johns Hopkins paying a visit to Shellenberger Field Saturday before Dickinson does the same Sunday.
