Box Score Danville, Ky. -- Emily Yanes' third-quarter goal proved the difference Saturday as the No. 18-ranked University of Lynchburg field hockey team won its fifth-straight game, 1-0 on the road at Centre.
The Hornets dominated the first half in every statistical category, out-shooting the Colonels by a 16-0 margin and earning eight corners to Centre's one, but CC goalie Carlie McKenry kept Lynchburg off the board with seven saves in the first 30 minutes.
Lynchburg withstood an early threat after halftime, thwarting a pair of Colonel corners in the first few minutes before the Hornets struck. After a Centre shot went wide, Lynchburg's Brittany Claybaugh played a big ball through the Colonel defense and found Yanes behind the Colonels with only the goalkeeper to beat. Yanes cut right around McKenry and put the Hornets in front in the 33rd minute.
Centre continued to pressure throughout the third, but Hornets goalie Kayla Brady made all three of her saves (along with an Aaryn Boatwright defensive save) in the period to keep the Colonels off the board.
Lynchburg regained the upper hand in the final 15 minutes, but none of the Hornets' four shots found the cage, and the game ended with that same 1-0 score.
Yanes led Lynchburg with five shots, while Ryleigh Cameron, Marlou Wendriks, and Kessa Romero each unleashed four.
The Hornets (7-1) will be right back on Centre's South Turf Sunday at 1 p.m. against Earlham in search of a sixth consecutive win.
