Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team erupted for 14 goals against Ferrum Wednesday night.
11th-ranked Lynchburg scored its most goals in a game since October 2019 when the Hornets also shut out the Panthers 14-0.
11 Hornets scored in the win with three players recording multiple scores. Marlou Wendriks led the way in the points department with six.
Wendriks reached her season-high in points during the first quarter. She contributed to Lynchburg's first four goals. The first two came off her stick, then she assisted on Olivia van Metre's and Khanyisile Mzizi's goals all before the 10-minute mark.
The Hornets ran up two more scores before the first quarter ended. Mzizi tallied her first multigoal day, and Mallory Lamb scored her first-collegiate goal.
The Hornets reached double-digits by halftime with two goals from Jenna Tangires, one from Marina Nadwodny, and the final one from Brooke Hyland. Lynchburg also registered 15 penalty corners before halftime.
Anna Dorrestijn got the scoring started in the second half just before the end of the third quarter. Madison Mark tallied her second-collegiate goal in the fourth quarter, and Aurora Balsamo put the finishing touches on the evening's scoring bonanza with two scores 2:30 apart. Those were Balsamo's first and second goals of her career.
Samira Gharavi made two saves in the fourth quarter securing Lynchburg's seventh shutout of the season.
The Hornets (12-1, 5-0 ODAC) travel to the Garden State for a matchup with No. 13 Kean on Saturday, Oct. 14.
