No. 11 field hockey falls on the road

Box Score

Union, N.J. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team came from behind to take a fourth quarter lead, but ultimately fell 3-2 in overtime on the road against nationally-ranked Kean Saturday afternoon.

The loss gave Lynchburg its first away from Shellenberger field this season and ended a 10-game win streak which was the program's longest since the spring 2021 season.

Kean took an early 1-0 advantage in the game's fourth minute, marking just the third time Lynchburg has trailed in a game all season.

Despite the fast start and a 14-4 shot advantage for Kean across the first half, the scoring halted there for the remainder of the first two quarters, sending Lynchburg to the break trailing for the first time this year.

Kayla Brady made six saves in the second quarter to keep Lynchburg within striking distance, marking the most stops she has made in any frame this season to combat seven penalty corners and nine shots taken by the Cougars in the period.

The score nearly remained unchanged through the entirety of the third quarter before a Khanyisile Mzizi strike put Lynchburg on the board in the 41st minute with her sixth goal of the season.

The freshman has scored three goals in the past two games and has 14 points in her first season.

Marlou Wendriks gave Lynchburg its first advantage of the game early in the fourth quarter off an Aaryn Boatwright assist for her team-and-conference-leading 13th goal of the year.

Wendriks has scored a goal in four-consecutive games and holds an 11-game point streak.

Kean got in the last word in regulation, forcing overtime with a timely score in the 54th minute to force Lynchburg's second overtime game this season.

After Lynchburg controlled pace of play in the second half, Kean retook the advantage on the offensive side of the ball in the extra frame, taking all four shots in the period and ultimately ending the game off the team's 15th penalty corner of the day in the fourth minute of overtime.

Lynchburg was outshot 22-14 on the day after outshooting opponents in nine-consecutive contests entering the game.

Brady's 12 saves in goal were a season-high and the most since a September 17, 2022 game against Johns Hopkins but she was conversely tested by a season-high 15 shots on goal and 15 penalty corners.

Lynchburg (12-2, 5-0 ODAC) drops its first game since September 9 and will turn its attention on short notice to its final non-conference game of the year Sunday, October 15 at No. 24 Swarthmore.

This is the third instance of Lynchburg playing on back-to-back days this season, with the Hornets sporting a 2-0 record in the back half of those doubleheaders so far and a 2-1 mark against ranked opponents.
